Discovering the Fourth Level

Meanwhile, back at the wonderful house, Benjamin and I were still exploring. I had come to understand that there was a fourth level and that it could actually be detected from the outside if one looked at the house sideways. But the Grand Stairway ended on the third level, at the place where I’d discovered the alcove containing the Ark of the Covenant. Could it be that there was an entrance through some hidden room or corridor?

So up again we climbed, past the second floor and the dreamers, up into the narrow, darkening stair that still felt like forbidden territory. Again we slowly circled the corridor with all its rooms. This time I did not pause to examine all the doors. They were now closed, but I knew that many expressions of the All were taking part there in the Great Work. I wondered how that would feel and what would be the experience there someday.

We passed on, feeling along the old walls for a hint of something more. I remembered an image from a dream I’d had while still an initiate. In the dream I had found an opening in a wall high above my head. It had looked like an ordinary storage space, but had no obvious means of access. But I had been curious and had managed to jump up and grab hold of what seemed like molding. I had been able to push at the paneling till it opened a bit, and then pulled myself up and through the opening, tumbling to the floor on a whole new level.

It occurred to me that the dream might have been a memory, as so many things are. So I moved along the walls, jumping here and there, until I felt the edge of the barely visible molding graze my hand. Benjamin lifted me as I seized it, kicking and scrabbling to get a better hold so I could pull myself up to where I could push on the panel. Sure enough, it gave way to my touch and I found myself reliving the dream. I pulled him up behind me.

All around us were treasures—old and valuable bits I had brought with me here from the turquoise planet. I was truly amazed, both that I had forgotten the magnificent collection and at the strange variety of things that I had felt to be valuable and brought with me. Some seemed strangely mundane, such as the wooden baby highchair with built-in potty. It was both nostalgic and humorous that I should have treasured a thing like that, a thing I had no doubt used in the long ago. It flashed me back to a memory of West Philadelphia, planet Earth, circa 1938. Now those things were in a room that was not a room, but another world altogether.

We could not remain there for long—just long enough to realize that there was a wealth of material to explore. One of the first surprises of the fourth level was that I had brought many remnants of childhood joys, including at least three amusement park rides.
